Send your main suitcase ahead in Japan when the next hotel has agreed to receive it and you can travel without it until the confirmed delivery date. Carry it on the train when you need the contents that day and can meet the train's luggage rules. For Japan luggage forwarding vs lockers, the key distinction is movement: a locker holds a bag at one location, while delivery moves it to another. co:sim mobile data can help check tracking and station maps, but does not arrange either service.
Choose according to when and where you next need the suitcase. A same-station sightseeing stop, a one-way journey to another city and a flight home require different solutions. The following matrix is a planning tool, not a promise of service availability.
| Your next step | First option to check | Condition that matters |
|---|---|---|
| Sightseeing, then returning to the same station | A locker or staffed storage | A suitable space and a workable collection deadline |
| Travelling to a different city with a day bag | Luggage delivery | The recipient accepts it and the delivery date works |
| Needing the full suitcase tonight | Carry it, or verify a specific same-day service | Ordinary forwarding is not automatically same-day |
| Taking a large case on the Shinkansen | Measure it and check the required seat reservation | The service's luggage rules and available space |
| Flying home soon | Check the airport delivery cutoff first | It may already be too late to send the bag |
| Tracking or finding storage online | co:sim data-only eSIM, if suitable | Mobile data does not reserve space or supply a phone number |
A data-only eSIM is an embedded SIM providing mobile data, rather than ordinary telephone calls or SMS. It is useful for internet messaging and maps, but cannot replace a local contact number when a delivery form asks for one. Ask the receiving hotel which contact details it wants you to use.
Forwarding works particularly well when you can skip carrying the main case through an intermediate stop. For example, arrange a confirmed delivery from your Tokyo hotel to your later Kyoto hotel, then take a smaller bag on a detour. This is an itinerary example, not a quoted delivery schedule: your actual handover time, destination and service determine when the suitcase can arrive.
Yamato's TA-Q-BIN information describes its parcel service and size and weight categories. Ask the sending counter for an estimate covering your exact addresses and date. A hotel-to-hotel movement should be agreed with both properties; a booking at an unstaffed apartment does not mean someone will be there to receive a parcel.
Before handing anything over, confirm the recipient's address, reservation name, check-in date and contact number. Ask whether the hotel will hold a bag arriving before you and whether it can receive the chosen payment arrangement. Keep the waybill and tracking reference. Photograph the label for your own use, but do not post it publicly: it contains travel and contact details.
Pack passports, medication, valuables, chargers and the clothes needed until the promised delivery in your day bag. co:sim data can help open the courier's tracking page, but a tracking update does not change the contracted delivery date. If the estimate does not fit your next stay, carry the case or choose a verified alternative rather than hoping it arrives earlier.
A locker is useful when you will return to the same collection point. It avoids sending a bag away and waiting for delivery, but it also ties the end of your day to that location. Before paying, consider whether the next train leaves from another station or from the opposite side of a large interchange. An apparently convenient locker can create a substantial backtrack.
Japan Guide's luggage guidance explains that lockers come in different sizes and that large compartments are less readily available. Do not assume a large suitcase will fit or that a suitable compartment will be free. Check the machine's actual dimensions, payment options, charging reset and maximum storage period. A calendar-day charge is not necessarily a rolling twenty-four-hour rental.
Save the station name, exit, floor, gate side, locker number and collection instructions. Check access hours as well as the rental limit: a locker inside a closed station is not useful before an early departure. Keep the receipt, key or the same payment card required to reopen it. A staffed luggage counter is a possible backup, but its opening hours and latest collection time need checking too.

As checked on 10 October 2026, JR Central's official luggage guidance requires a seat with an oversized baggage area for a bag whose height, width and depth total more than 160 cm and no more than 250 cm on the Tokaido–Sanyo–Kyushu Shinkansen. That is the corridor connecting Tokyo, Shin-Osaka, Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo. Do not apply this rule indiscriminately to every railway in Japan.
Measure the actual case, including protruding handles and wheels, rather than relying on its retail label. A bag at or below 160 cm falls into the ordinary luggage arrangements described by JR Central, though you still need to store it safely. A bag over 250 cm cannot be brought on board under this guidance. Special items have separate provisions; check the official page if you are travelling with sports equipment or a stroller.
JR Central says the designated baggage-area reservation adds no charge compared with the equivalent ordinary reserved seat or Green Car seat. You still need the relevant train ticket, and the suitable seats can be unavailable. Reserve the correct option when buying the ticket. An empty-looking space behind the last row is not automatically yours to use.
The same official page describes a trial making some deck compartments available without a reservation. It still explicitly requires the oversized-baggage reservation for bags exceeding the threshold. Do not treat a photograph of an open rack, or a general statement about unreserved storage, as permission to ignore that requirement.

Forwarding from an arrival airport to a hotel and sending a bag ahead for your flight home are different bookings. For the latter, Yamato's Airport TA-Q-BIN guidance says to hand over luggage by two days before departure, or three days in some areas, subject to the sending counter's deadline. It describes delivery by the day before the flight and collection at a participating counter on departure day.
Verify the airport, terminal, counter hours, flight details and exact sending deadline before paying. Do not address an ordinary hotel parcel to an airport and assume it will be held in the right place. If you fly tomorrow, the standard airport-forwarding window may already have closed. Carrying the case or using a specifically confirmed alternative is safer than relying on an unverified exception.
Some routes offer same-day services, but the label alone is not enough. Confirm that your origin, destination, handover cutoff and collection time all qualify. Separate the journey you want from the service the counter actually accepts, and keep essentials with you until the suitcase is back in your hands.
Compare delivery for the actual bag and addresses with the locker rental, any repeated daily charges and the travel needed to retrieve it. Carrying a bag can avoid a delivery fee but may change which seat or transfer you can comfortably use. Include effort and access needs in the decision; saving a small amount is less useful if it requires a difficult detour with luggage.
For online preparation, co:sim's plan pages show the listed networks, data allowance and validity. Check these against your phone and travel dates rather than assuming any plan suits every itinerary. If Korea follows Japan, review South Korea data plans separately; a Japan-only plan does not thereby cover the next country. Save courier receipts and station directions offline as well.

Forward luggage in Japan when a confirmed recipient can accept it and you can do without its contents until the stated delivery date. Carry it on the train when you need it that day, can manage it through the stations and have checked the relevant luggage rules. A locker is a third option for a short stop only if you will return to that collection point. It does not move a suitcase to the next city.
Before forwarding, agree the recipient name, address, check-in date and contact number with the hotel. Keep medication, documents and overnight essentials with you. A co:sim data-only eSIM can help retrieve maps or courier tracking on a compatible phone, but it provides neither delivery insurance nor a telephone number. If the delivery estimate is too late for your itinerary, change the baggage plan before handing the case over.
Do not assume you can send a suitcase to a Japanese airport the day before departure using standard airport forwarding. Yamato's Airport TA-Q-BIN instructions state a sending deadline two days before departure, or three days in some areas, with the precise cutoff depending on the drop-off counter. Airport collection is a specific service: the terminal and participating counter must match your flight arrangements.
A same-day or faster service may exist for a particular route, but it needs explicit confirmation for your addresses and handover time. If the normal deadline has passed, compare carrying the bag with a verified alternative. Keep passports, medication, tickets and chargers out of the forwarded case. co:sim mobile data may help check tracking or contact the hotel through an internet app; it cannot extend the courier cutoff or make a delayed bag arrive before your flight.
A large suitcase will not fit every Japanese station locker, and a suitable compartment may be occupied. Japan Guide's luggage overview notes the limited availability of larger lockers compared with small ones. Check the dimensions of the actual compartment before paying, along with its accepted payment method, daily charging reset, storage limit and access hours. These details belong to the particular locker operator, not to a universal nationwide rule.
Record the station, exit, floor, gate side and locker number, and keep whatever receipt, key or card is needed for collection. Think through the return journey before leaving the bag: collecting it from the wrong station can undo the benefit of travelling light. If lockers are full, ask about staffed storage and its closing time. Forwarding is better suited to moving the suitcase elsewhere, provided the receiving property and delivery date have been confirmed.
Decide where the suitcase should be each night, then check co:sim's Japan options for maps, messaging and tracking during the trip.

Travel TipsTake the Nankai Rapi:t if you are staying around Namba, Dotonbori or Shinsaibashi and want a reserved seat with luggage space. Take the JR Haruka if you are going to Tennoji, Osaka Station, Shin-Osaka or Kyoto, or you hold a Japan Rail Pass. The two trains end in different parts of the city, so your hotel decides the answer more than the fare.
Travel TipsTake the highway bus from Shinjuku if you want the lowest fare and the widest choice of departure times, and can accept some traffic risk on busy days. Take the Fuji Excursion train if you want a fixed arrival time, hold a JR pass, or are travelling on a weekend or holiday when roads around Mt Fuji fill up. The train costs roughly double the bus without a pass.
Travel TipsBook a reserved seat on the Tokaido Shinkansen if you travel on a designated peak date, carry a large suitcase, travel as a group or board mid-route at Kyoto or Nagoya. A non-reserved ticket suits a solo traveler with light luggage who values the freedom to take any train that day. On peak dates JR Central sells every Nozomi seat as reserved, so a non-reserved ticket no longer buys a seat on the fastest trains ([JR Central](https://railway.jr-central.co.jp/nozomi/)).
