What can you do with each plan size?

1 GB

Enough for a short trip with light use: messaging, email, and a few dozen map lookups a day. Stream music sparingly and keep video calls brief — a 1 GB plan covers roughly 15–20 minutes of video calling or about 3–4 hours of browsing and chat, spread across your stay.

5 GB

Comfortable for most short-to-medium trips. You can check maps constantly, post to social media daily, and stream an hour of standard-definition video, or take a couple of 20-minute video calls, without watching your usage closely.

10 GB

Built for regular streaming and calling on top of everyday browsing. Expect room for a few HD episodes, an hour or more of video calls, and unrestricted maps and social use across a one-to-two-week trip — the most common choice for travelers who want to stop counting.

20 GB

For heavy users or longer stays: daily HD streaming, frequent video calls, hotspot use for a laptop, and background app updates all fit comfortably. A good match for a month abroad or for working remotely off your eSIM.

Daily data budgets

If you would rather plan by day than by activity, start from one of these baselines and multiply by your trip length.

Light — messaging, maps, occasional browsing: ~0.3 GB/day
Moderate — social media, music, some browsing: ~0.7 GB/day
Heavy — video streaming, hotspot use, frequent calls: ~1.5 GB/day
Very intensive — constant HD streaming and hotspot sharing: ~3 GB/day

Round up: it is cheaper to have a little spare data than to run out and buy a top-up mid-trip.

Ways to stretch your data

Download offline maps

Save your route before you land so navigation works with little to no live data.

Limit background refresh

Turn off background app refresh for apps you are not actively using so they stop syncing on your data.

Lower video quality

Drop streaming apps to standard definition on mobile data and save HD for Wi-Fi.

Watch hotspot sharing

A laptop tethered to your eSIM can burn a day of data in an hour, so cap it to what you actually need.

Frequently asked questions

Most travelers land in the 0.3–1.5 GB per day range depending on habits: light users messaging and checking maps use closer to 0.3 GB, while heavy streamers and hotspot users can pass 1.5 GB. Use the calculator on this page to get a number based on your actual activities.

At a moderate pace (social media, some browsing, occasional video) you are typically looking at 7–10 GB for two weeks. Light users can get by on 3–5 GB, and heavy streamers should budget 15 GB or more.

For most people, yes — 10 GB comfortably covers moderate-to-heavy use across a two-week trip, including regular maps, social media, and some HD video. If you plan to stream video daily or tether a laptop, consider sizing up.

A 1 GB plan suits light, short trips: messaging, email, browsing, and light map use for a few days. It is tight for streaming or long video calls — see the plan size guide above for what fits in each tier.

Less than you would expect. Turn-by-turn navigation typically uses only a few MB per hour since it is mostly text and vector map tiles, not images. Downloading maps for offline use before your trip cuts that even further.

A travel eSIM sized to your trip removes the risk entirely — you pay one upfront price with no per-MB roaming charges from your home carrier. If you are close to your limit, most eSIM plans let you top up instantly instead of falling back to expensive roaming.

Most travelers do not. Unlimited plans cost more and go unused by anyone who is not streaming or hotspotting all day. Sizing a fixed plan to your actual habits, using the tiers above, is usually cheaper for the same trip.

Your phone tracks per-app and total data use in its settings (Settings > Mobile Data on iPhone, Settings > Network & internet on Android). If you bought your eSIM from co:sim, you can also check remaining data anytime from My Plans in your account.
