Why Is My Phone Using the Home SIM’s Data Instead of the Travel eSIM?

Your phone can use the home SIM even when the travel eSIM is installed. Dual-SIM systems choose a default mobile-data line, and some iPhones can switch data automatically. Select the travel line before opening maps or streaming abroad, then confirm the status in Settings. co:sim plan pages identify the supported network, but the phone still controls which SIM supplies data.

#How do you select the travel line?

On iPhone, open Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data and choose the travel line. Review Allow Cellular Data Switching if you want to prevent automatic fallback. Pixel exposes the choice under Settings, Network and internet, SIMs, Mobile data. Galaxy uses SIM manager and Preferred SIMs. The labels vary, but the principle is the same: choose one data line and verify it after a restart.

#Why can the home line still create charges?

Calls and messages can remain enabled on the home line while data uses the travel eSIM. Some phones also keep automatic switching available when the selected line has weak service. Turn off data roaming on the home line if your carrier recommends it, and leave the travel line's roaming toggle in the state required by its provider. A data-only co:sim plan does not supply a phone number for voice or SMS.

#How can you test the selected line safely?

With Wi-Fi off, open the SIM settings and note the selected data line. Load a small text page, then check the home carrier's usage app and the travel provider dashboard. Do not use a large video as a first test. If the travel line shows no service, troubleshoot registration before re-enabling automatic switching; changing lines repeatedly can hide the original problem.

#How can you prevent automatic fallback to the home line?

On iPhone, inspect Allow Cellular Data Switching after you choose the travel line under Cellular Data. When the control is enabled, the phone can use the other line under some conditions. Android wording varies by manufacturer, so check the preferred mobile-data SIM and any automatic-switching option. Turn off home-line data roaming if your carrier recommends it for the trip. These controls are independent of calls and texts: you may still keep the home number reachable while the travel profile supplies data. Check your home carrier's rates because incoming calls or messages may follow separate roaming rules.

#What should you do when the travel line has no service?

Do not restore automatic switching as the first response, because that can hide the original connection failure and move usage back to the home SIM. Verify that the travel line is enabled, the destination is covered by the plan, and its roaming toggle matches the plan instructions. Compare the network shown on the phone with the supported network named on the co:sim plan page. If registration still fails, record the error and contact support. A phone can display an installed eSIM while the carrier connection is unavailable; installation alone does not select the correct data line or guarantee immediate service.

#How do you confirm which line used data?

With Wi-Fi off, check the data-line selector, load a small text webpage, and inspect the usage counters for both lines. Device counters can be estimates and may include traffic from before this trip unless reset at the start. The travel provider's dashboard and the home carrier's usage app provide a second check, though updates can lag. Avoid streaming a video to test the connection. If the home line's counter rises unexpectedly, stop mobile data and recheck switching, roaming, and SIM selection before continuing.

#FAQ

#Does choosing a travel eSIM disable my home number?

No. The phone usually lets you choose one line for mobile data while leaving another line available for calls or text messages. Selecting a co:sim travel eSIM for data therefore does not automatically turn off the home number. That separation is useful for receiving messages, but the home carrier may still charge for roaming calls, texts, or data under its own terms. Check the home carrier's settings and rates before departure. On iPhone, review Allow Cellular Data Switching; on Android, inspect preferred SIM and any fallback option. After arrival, confirm the travel line is enabled and selected for mobile data, then test a small page with Wi-Fi off. co:sim data-only plans have no phone number, so they cannot replace the home line for ordinary voice calls or carrier SMS.

#Why did my phone switch back to the home SIM?

Automatic data switching is one possible cause, especially if the travel line loses service. Other causes include a disabled travel profile, a changed preferred-SIM setting after a restart, or a registration problem in the destination. Begin by checking the current mobile-data selector rather than assuming the phone remembers your earlier choice. Then inspect the travel line's signal and the plan's roaming instructions. Turn off automatic fallback while diagnosing so traffic does not quietly move to the home carrier. A co:sim plan page identifies the supported destination and network, but phone settings decide which profile supplies each byte. If the travel line remains unavailable, collect the exact network or error shown and contact support; repeatedly flipping lines can obscure a useful clue and may create roaming charges.

#Can I leave my home SIM on for calls while avoiding data roaming?

Often yes, because modern dual-SIM phones separate the default data line from the line used for calls or messages. Choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and review the home line's data-roaming option. On iPhone, also inspect Allow Cellular Data Switching; Android devices may have a similarly named fallback control. However, a home line that stays enabled can still create charges for calls or texts depending on its carrier, and some handset behaviors vary by model and software version. Ask the home carrier about its roaming policy if keeping the number reachable is essential. co:sim's data-only profile is meant to supply internet access, not a second ordinary phone number. Test your final settings with a small webpage and check the data selector again after a restart or border crossing.
