Does an eSIM Have a SIM PIN or PUK Code?

Yes, an eSIM can have a SIM PIN, and it can require a PUK (Personal Unblocking Key) after repeated wrong PIN entries. Those security codes protect the mobile subscription; they are not the QR code or manual activation details used to download a travel eSIM such as co:sim.

#What is the difference between a SIM PIN, PUK, and eSIM activation code?

A SIM PIN locks access to a mobile subscription after a restart or when the line is enabled. A PUK unlocks that subscription after too many incorrect PIN attempts. The eSIM QR code, SM-DP+ address, and activation code instead download a profile to the device. One credential cannot substitute for another.

Apple says not to guess a SIM PIN or PUK and to ask the network provider for the default PIN or PUK in its official SIM PIN guidance. T-Mobile likewise warns that repeated incorrect PUK attempts can permanently block the SIM in its PUK unlock instructions. Samsung's SIM card lock guide shows where Galaxy users manage the lock and explains the consequence of repeated errors.

For co:sim, the emailed QR code installs the data-only profile. It is sensitive and should remain private, but it is not a SIM PIN or PUK. The phone may show a PIN setting for the installed line; only use a code supplied or confirmed by the relevant carrier.

#How do you know which eSIM code the phone is asking for?

Read the prompt before entering anything. SIM PIN usually appears when unlocking the line after a restart. Enter PUK means the PIN retry limit has been reached. Scan QR Code, Activation Code, or SM-DP+ Address belongs to eSIM installation. A phone passcode prompt protects the device itself and is another separate credential.

Stop if the wording is unclear. Check the line label under the SIM or mobile-network settings, because a dual-SIM phone may be asking about the home line rather than the travel profile. Travelers comparing setup requirements can inspect a Japan data-only eSIM as one example, but should get any PIN or PUK from the carrier that owns the affected line.

#What should you do when an eSIM asks for a PIN or PUK?

Do not try familiar numbers, the phone passcode, an order number, or digits from the QR email. Contact the network provider for the affected subscription and state the exact prompt. Keep the eSIM installed while support verifies the line.

If you deliberately enabled SIM PIN earlier, use the PIN you set. If the phone requests a PUK, stop guessing immediately. Once the carrier provides the PUK, follow its exact sequence for entering the PUK and choosing a new PIN. A wrong PUK entered too many times can make replacement necessary.

#FAQ

#Do all eSIMs come with a default SIM PIN?

No. An eSIM is capable of SIM PIN protection, but whether a default PIN exists or the lock is enabled depends on the carrier and profile. Many travelers install a data-only eSIM without ever seeing a PIN prompt. A prompt can also belong to the physical home SIM in a dual-SIM phone, so verify the line name before entering anything. Do not assume common defaults such as 0000 or 1234; incorrect attempts can exhaust the retry allowance. For a co:sim travel profile, treat the QR email as installation information, not proof of a PIN value. If the settings show that the affected line is locked, ask the carrier responsible for that line to confirm the correct PIN. The device maker can explain where the setting lives, but it generally cannot retrieve a carrier-controlled PIN or PUK.

#Is the eSIM QR code the same as a SIM PIN?

No. An eSIM QR code carries information that lets a compatible phone download a mobile profile. A SIM PIN controls access to a profile that is already installed, usually after restart or when the line is switched on. A PUK is the recovery key used after too many wrong SIM PIN attempts. These credentials serve different stages and are not interchangeable. co:sim sends its installation QR code by email after checkout, so keep that message private and use it only in the eSIM installation flow. If the phone explicitly asks for SIM PIN or PUK, do not scan the QR again and do not paste an activation code into the prompt. Identify which line is locked and contact that line's network provider. Sharing a QR publicly may expose installation credentials even though it will not solve a PIN request.

#Where can I find the PUK for an eSIM?

The carrier that issued the affected eSIM supplies the PUK. Depending on the carrier, it may appear in an authenticated account, on original subscription documentation, or only through support after identity checks. It is not normally generated by the phone, Apple, Google, Samsung, or a generic PUK website. First confirm which line shows the request, especially on a dual-SIM device. Then contact that carrier without entering more guesses. Have the account or order reference ready, but never send passwords or activation QR codes through a public channel. If the locked line is a co:sim profile, use the official support route and include the exact on-screen wording and device model. If it is the home SIM, contact the home carrier instead. The correct PUK is tied to the subscription, not to the handset model or destination.

#What happens if I enter the wrong PUK too many times?

Repeated wrong PUK entries can permanently block the SIM or eSIM profile, after which the carrier may need to replace it. The remaining-attempt count and replacement process vary, so the safest response to a PUK screen is to stop typing and contact the issuer. Do not test codes found online, reuse a PUK from another line, or assume the device passcode will work. A factory reset does not recover a carrier-blocked subscription and may create additional setup work. Keep the profile installed while the carrier checks it unless support explicitly instructs removal. If mobile data is urgent, use trusted Wi-Fi or another active line temporarily rather than spending attempts. The PUK protects the subscription against unauthorized use; its strict retry limit is intentional, not a software bug that repeated restarts will clear.

#Can I turn off the SIM PIN on an eSIM?

Often yes, if the carrier profile and device expose that option and you know the current PIN. On iPhone, the control is generally under the selected cellular line; Android wording varies by manufacturer. Disabling the lock reduces the chance of a travel-day PIN prompt, but it also removes one layer of subscription protection if someone gains access to the device. Never toggle the setting experimentally when you do not know the existing PIN, because the phone must verify it and wrong attempts count. If you keep SIM PIN enabled, store the correct information securely and separately from the handset. Changing or disabling a SIM PIN does not alter the eSIM QR code, data allowance, phone number status, or plan activation. It only changes how the installed subscription is unlocked on the device.

Keep installation credentials private, and ask the issuing carrier before spending another PIN or PUK attempt.
