For a Sicily 7-day itinerary without a car, keep the route to Palermo, Cefalù and Catania, with one day reserved for the cross-island transfer. Two nights in Palermo, one in Cefalù and three in Catania give you three bases without changing hotels daily. If the long transfer or your flights do not fit, stay in western Sicily instead; co:sim mobile data can help check services, but cannot make an impractical connection work.
Yes, if you limit the number of bases and choose accommodation for transport access as well as atmosphere. Rick Steves' public-transport itinerary recommends grouping overnights and taking day trips rather than treating the island like a driving circuit. This route applies that principle to a smaller selection of stops.
The itinerary below is an editorial proposal, not a booked transport package. It assumes arrival in Palermo and departure from Catania. Seven days means six overnight stays here. A late inbound flight or early outbound flight reduces sightseeing time; check those before deciding that every listed activity fits.
| Day | Main plan | Overnight |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Palermo; settle in and take a short walk | Palermo |
| 2 | Palermo's historic centre and one substantial visit | Palermo |
| 3 | Travel to Cefalù; old town and waterfront | Cefalù |
| 4 | Cross-island travel; reach Catania and check in | Catania |
| 5 | Catania's centre, market area and a cultural visit | Catania |
| 6 | Conditional Etna excursion or another Catania day | Catania |
| 7 | Leave from Catania, with sightseeing only if the flight allows | — |
Do not add Agrigento, Siracusa, Noto and Taormina simply because they also appear on a map of Sicily. Each addition takes time for luggage, connections and the route back. A week can introduce the island; it does not need to cover its entire highlight list.
In Palermo, look for a location that balances the historic centre with your chosen arrival and departure points. In Cefalù, check the walking route between the station and the accommodation. In Catania, make sure the hotel works for both the city centre and your planned airport transfer.
“Near the station” is not a complete accessibility description. Ask about steps, lifts, cobbles, slopes and whether a taxi can reach the entrance. Compare the actual route with the luggage you will carry. A charming upper-floor apartment is less convenient if every change of base means carrying a large suitcase up narrow stairs.
Save the check-in arrangements before travelling. Ask about bag storage if you arrive before the room is ready, rather than designing a museum visit around luggage storage you have not confirmed. Travelling light is useful here because you will move between rail or coach services and accommodation on foot.
On arrival day, reach the hotel, eat and take one uncomplicated neighbourhood walk. Do not book a timed attraction immediately after the flight. Delays and check-in formalities can consume the margin, and the first evening is more enjoyable without racing a reservation.
The official Palermo guide highlights the Arab-Norman heritage, Casa Professa and historic markets including Ballarò, Capo and Vucciria. For the second day, choose one substantial interior visit, then explore nearby streets and a market according to current opening information. Check whether your chosen site requires a reservation or has restricted access that day.
Use the rest of the day for the city itself. A café break, a slow lunch and time to orient yourself are legitimate parts of the itinerary. If Monreale is a priority, give it the space it needs and remove another activity; do not silently add a side trip to an already full Palermo day.
Check a Palermo-to-Cefalù journey for your actual date on Trenitalia. Rick Steves also identifies Cefalù as a public-transport outing from Palermo, but a guidebook's approximate journey time should not replace a current departure search.

After arriving, leave bags at the accommodation if arranged, explore the old town and take a waterfront walk. This overnight stop changes the pace: you can enjoy the evening without planning an immediate return to Palermo. Treat beach time as optional, depending on weather, sea conditions and your interests, rather than promising a swimming day.
Decide in advance whether you prefer Cefalù as a day trip. Keeping all three initial nights in Palermo avoids one hotel change and can make an onward coach departure easier. It is a valid modification, though the main itinerary deliberately gives Cefalù its own night.
Keep day 4 for travel. Search the complete rail journey to Catania on Trenitalia's official site, including any changes the planner proposes. Inspect the connection margin, stations and arrival time before choosing accommodation or committing to an evening reservation. We do not give a fixed cross-island duration, fare or frequency: these depend on the date and available service.
For a bus alternative, compare the dated coach options on SAIS Autolinee's operator site, which provides route searches for Palermo and Catania. If the useful coach leaves from Palermo, include the journey back from Cefalù and the move to the departure stop in your comparison. A faster coach segment is not necessarily a faster door-to-door trip.
Do not assume a station and a coach stop share an entrance. Check the precise boarding address, baggage conditions and what happens if an earlier leg is late. Separate purchases can leave you managing a missed connection yourself. Choose a generous margin rather than an attractive-looking chain of tight departures.
| Transfer approach | Main advantage |
|---|
On reaching Catania, check in and keep the evening simple. A short walk and dinner are enough. This transfer day is the itinerary's main compromise, not a spare sightseeing day to fill with another town.
The official Catania guide places the basalt elephant in Piazza Duomo, describes the fish-market area behind the cathedral and highlights the Benedictine Monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena. These give day 5 a compact city focus. Check access and tour arrangements for any interior visit you choose.

For day 6, consider an organised Etna excursion only after confirming current weather, access restrictions, the route's difficulty and transport from your accommodation. The tourism guide describes Etna outings, but it is not a live safety clearance. Confirm the meeting point, equipment and cancellation terms directly with the organiser; do not assume a summit visit is included or possible.
If conditions do not suit, keep another Catania day. A cultural visit, café stops and a different neighbourhood are better than forcing a mountain outing because it appears in the schedule. This fallback also works for travellers who prefer architecture and food to an excursion.
On day 7, leave a suitable margin for the airport journey and airline requirements. Add sightseeing only after allowing for baggage collection from the hotel and the actual departure transfer. Do not cross the island back to Palermo on departure day without explicitly redesigning the trip.
Download rail or coach tickets, hotel addresses and a basic map before each transfer. Keep the original ticket format and follow the current validation instructions for the product purchased. Offline files remain useful when the phone loses signal or an app fails.
co:sim's Italy data plans provide mobile data for route searches, messages and booking access, without an Italian phone number. Check device compatibility and install using the supplied instructions before relying on the travel line. The product page lists networks and top-up information; choose the actual package that fits your trip rather than assuming every plan behaves identically.
| Connection option | Fits when |
|---|
If Sicily follows another European destination, compare the European regional plans with every planned country. A regional label does not establish the coverage of an individual package. Keep offline tickets regardless of the connection option you choose.
Compare Italy eSIM data plansPalermo, Cefalù and Catania can form a seven-day Sicily trip without a rental car if you accept one substantial transfer day and keep sightseeing selective. The proposed six-night split is two nights in Palermo, one in Cefalù and three in Catania, with arrival in Palermo and departure from Catania. Check transport for the actual dates before booking accommodation, especially the Cefalù-to-Catania journey and any onward airport transfer. Avoid adding several more towns to an already short schedule. Station-to-hotel walks and luggage handling are part of the journey, not incidental details. A co:sim Italy data-only plan can support route checks and messages, but does not include transport tickets or guarantee signal on every leg. If the crossing looks uncomfortable, use Cefalù as a day trip and consider keeping the whole holiday in western Sicily instead.
A car-free Sicily itinerary can work with downloaded tickets, offline maps and accommodation Wi-Fi, but mobile data is useful for service changes, finding a boarding point and contacting a host. Prepare those offline files even if you buy a travel plan. co:sim Italy plans supply mobile data rather than an Italian phone number, so retain an appropriate way to make any necessary telephone call or receive a verification code. Check the phone's eSIM support and lock status before buying. Select the intended line for mobile data and follow its roaming instructions; do not accidentally send data through your home line. Network availability can vary, and an internet connection does not replace a correctly purchased or validated ticket. The practical goal is to have both live information and a usable backup when an app, battery or signal fails during a transfer.
An Etna excursion is optional in this seven-day itinerary. The proposed Catania stay leaves one day that can become an organised outing if current conditions, access, transport and your mobility needs fit. Check with the organiser rather than interpreting a tourism description as permission to reach a particular altitude or the summit. A second city day is a sensible fallback when the excursion is unsuitable. If the bigger concern is the long cross-island journey, redesign the holiday around Palermo and Cefalù instead, with flights that support staying in the west. That removes Catania and Etna from this version, but creates more time for neighbourhoods, food and a relaxed coast visit. Book the route you actually want; adding a volcano, another city and a return crossing purely to complete a checklist makes a short car-free holiday unnecessarily demanding.
Keep the route small, give the crossing its own day and protect time for a slower stop. Before leaving, compare co:sim's Italy plans, save the official transport links and confirm each boarding point.
