For a Portugal 7 day train itinerary, spend days one to three in Lisbon, day four in Coimbra, and days five to seven in Porto. Book the two intercity legs separately so Coimbra is a real stop, not a rushed platform break. A data-only eSIM (embedded SIM) such as co:sim can help with station transfers and booking messages, alongside tickets and maps saved offline.

This route works best with arrival in Lisbon and departure from Porto. Those flights are a planning preference, not a requirement: if you must fly home from Lisbon, reserve time for the return journey and shorten the Porto section. Seven calendar days do not automatically mean seven full days outside, so adjust the first and last sightseeing blocks around your actual flights.
Follow the northbound sequence Lisbon, Coimbra, Porto rather than returning to Lisbon after every stop. It gives each city a different job: Lisbon is the longer introduction, Coimbra is an overnight university-city visit, and Porto is a relaxed finish. The Lisbon–Porto rail guide from Seat61 explains the Alfa Pendular and Intercity services and, crucially, which stations they use.
Do not add Sintra, the Douro Valley and the Algarve simply because all appear on a Portugal wish list. Each changes the transport problem. If Sintra is essential, use day three for it and drop the Belém plan; if a Douro outing is essential, replace a Porto day rather than squeezing it into departure morning.
Choose the actual station that fits your hotel and selected train: Lisboa Santa Apolónia and Lisboa Oriente are different places. Seat61's station guidance distinguishes the central Santa Apolónia terminus from Oriente and describes exceptions among through services. Never book a station because its name appears first in a search result, then assume you can comfortably reach it with luggage from anywhere in Lisbon.
On day one, put the bags down and walk in a manageable area around your accommodation. Save hills and ambitious sightseeing for a day when you are rested. On day two, choose an Alfama or central-neighbourhood walk and one indoor visit, with time to eat between them. On day three, focus on Belém or another district rather than repeatedly crossing the city for individual photos.
Lisbon's gradients are part of planning, not just scenery. When choosing accommodation, inspect the final walking route from public transport and consider steps, steep streets and your luggage. A room that looks close on the map can be inconvenient at the end of a travel day. Check accessibility directly if stairs are a concern, and avoid making your most strenuous walk the approach to a fixed train departure.
Search for Coimbra-B as the intercity arrival station and confirm the itinerary offered for your date. The Lisbon to Coimbra-B route listing establishes the rail connection, but its displayed times and fares are not promises for every day. Use the railway operator's current booking results as the final authority for the journey you buy.
Coimbra-B is not the university entrance or your central hotel. Arrange the last leg separately and check the current city connection before travel; do not rely on an old guide that assumes a particular shuttle train still operates. A bus, taxi or other local service is a separate practical decision that should account for luggage, service changes and your accommodation's exact location.

Leave bags before the uphill sightseeing if you have confirmed storage with your accommodation. The University of Coimbra visitor site is the place to check visit programmes, opening information and accessibility. Buy the admission that matches the spaces you actually want to see, rather than assuming every university attraction is included in one unspecified ticket. Keep the evening for the lower town and a meal instead of a second long-distance journey.
On day five, return to the station named on your ticket with time for the local transfer. The Coimbra-B to Porto route page is a useful cross-check of the onward rail connection. Confirm whether your booking ends at Campanhã or includes another leg; “Porto” in a travel plan is not a complete station instruction.
Porto Campanhã is the principal long-distance stop on this route, while São Bento is a different station closer to the historic centre. Seat61 explains the transfer between them. Check the connection and ticket conditions for your journey rather than assuming every product covers every local ride. co:sim data can help you follow an updated route to the hotel, but save the address before leaving Coimbra.

Use the rest of day five for a modest walk and an early meal. On day six, combine the Ribeira waterfront with a neighbourhood or attraction above the river, allowing for the climb back. Day seven is a flexible final morning if departure permits. A river cruise, cellar visit or museum can be worthwhile, but pick the experience that interests you and check its own booking conditions instead of collecting timed reservations across the city.
Reserve the intercity trains after choosing your overnight pattern. Alfa Pendular and Intercity services use reserved seats, as explained in the rail service guide. Keeping both tickets accessible makes it easier to identify the correct carriage and seat. Check the change conditions before choosing a restrictive fare, especially if a flight arrival and train departure fall on the same day.
Leave generous room between a train arrival and a paid attraction slot. Coimbra is the clearest example: reaching Coimbra-B is only one part of getting to a university visit. A delayed arrival, unavailable locker or slow hotel check-in should not consume the whole day. If the attraction is your main reason for stopping, consider a later visit or the following morning, then adjust the Porto train accordingly.
For rain, substitute an indoor visit for one exposed walk and keep shoes suitable for wet paving. For heat, move the steeper neighbourhood walks away from the hottest part of the day. These are scheduling choices, not guarantees of weather. On departure day, choose a short activity near your bags and transport route; a distant excursion adds another avoidable dependency.
Use mobile data for live departures, hotel instructions and maps, and Wi-Fi for large downloads. co:sim provides data-only eSIM plans, so ordinary phone calls and SMS are not included with the travel data. Internet messaging works through apps when you have a usable connection. If a hotel needs a telephone call, know which service you will use before relying on the eSIM alone.
Check a compatible, unlocked phone and compare the current Portugal data plans against your full travel dates. co:sim sends installation instructions by email; follow the purchased plan's instructions over reliable Wi-Fi and retain access to the order. Review the allowance and validity conditions instead of assuming all plans start counting in the same way. A phone that is online still needs offline tickets and enough battery for the day.
If you are continuing beyond Portugal, compare the Europe regional options and check the current country list for every stop. Do not infer cross-border service from the itinerary's rail connections.
FREECheck the Portugal free eSIM offerOne night in Coimbra can fit a seven-day Lisbon–Coimbra–Porto train itinerary when you choose a focused university visit and leave time for the old town, rather than trying to see every museum. The important constraint is the transfer from Coimbra-B to your accommodation and then to the university area. Treat those as separate legs, especially with luggage or limited mobility. Check the university's current visitor programme before booking a train that arrives shortly before a timed admission. An afternoon arrival followed by a rushed evening departure would remove much of the benefit of stopping, so this itinerary recommends staying overnight. If the university is your main interest, choose a visit time first and build the two rail journeys around it. If your arrival in Portugal is late or your departure is early, dropping a Lisbon extra is usually simpler than compressing Coimbra into a platform stop.
A data-only eSIM can support maps, online travel information and internet messaging during a Portugal rail trip, but it does not cover every communication need. A co:sim plan does not provide ordinary voice calls, SMS or a Portuguese phone number. Keep railway tickets downloaded, because mobile coverage, an app session or a phone battery can fail when you need to show them. Save the exact names of Lisboa Santa Apolónia or Oriente, Coimbra-B and Porto Campanhã alongside your bookings, rather than depending on a fresh search at each station. Use Wi-Fi to download maps and large documents before the travel day. If you already have suitable roaming, compare its terms with buying another plan. A family that splits up may need independent connections; a single phone acting as a hotspot is less useful when its owner walks away.
Prepare mobile data for a Lisbon–Coimbra–Porto trip before the first station transfer, while you have reliable Wi-Fi and time to check the phone. For co:sim, confirm eSIM compatibility and that the handset is unlocked, then follow the installation instructions sent with your order. Read the selected plan's validity and start conditions rather than assuming installation alone determines the beginning of service. Keep your usual number available if existing bookings require verification messages, and check the home carrier's roaming settings and charges separately. Save tickets, accommodation addresses and the Coimbra-B transfer plan offline. Once travelling, set the intended line for mobile data and monitor usage, particularly if cloud photos or video apps run in the background. A power bank and an accessible order email are practical backups, but neither makes reception on every stretch of railway a guarantee.
Book the two intercity legs around your overnight stays, give Coimbra a genuine visit, and protect the final departure buffer. Check current co:sim plans after fixing your dates so the connection supports the itinerary you actually booked.
