For most Luxembourg Airport to city journeys, take the free direct tram and choose Hamilius for the centre or Gare Centrale for the railway station. Use a bus when its stop better matches your hotel, or a taxi for door-to-door convenience. A co:sim data-only eSIM (embedded SIM, without a phone number) can help you check departures after leaving the terminal.
The tram is the simplest starting point for a central hotel because you can stay aboard from the airport to central stops. A bus can be better for a particular address; a taxi removes the final walk and makes sense when luggage or access needs dominate. Compare the whole journey, including the walk from your stop, rather than choosing by vehicle alone.
| Option | Best fit | Cost or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Direct tram | Hamilius, central stops and Gare Centrale | Free domestic public transport; check service at your arrival time |
| City bus | A hotel nearer a stop on its route | Free domestic public transport; choose the correct route and direction |
| Taxi | A specific door, bulky bags or a difficult final walk | Paid; request a quote and confirm pickup arrangements |
The airport's Bus & Tram page lists the airport tram and current bus routes. The government's public transport guide confirms that visitors benefit from free domestic services too. You do not need to be a resident to use the ordinary free journey.
Build your arrival plan around a hotel address, not a search for “Luxembourg centre”. If your accommodation emails a suggested stop, enter both that stop and the street address in your journey planner. The remaining walk may decide the winner, especially when you are carrying bags after a flight.
Follow the terminal's tram signs to the airport stop and check the departure display for the service away from the airport. The official tram station list includes Findel–Luxembourg Airport, Kirchberg, Hamilius and Gare Centrale. You therefore do not need the old airport-bus-to-tram interchange for this direct trip.

Use Hamilius as your starting search for an address in the central shopping and old-town area. Use Gare Centrale for the main railway station, an onward train or a hotel in the station neighbourhood. They are different stops. A booking saying “near the station” should not automatically send you off the tram at Hamilius.
Stay alert to the name on the vehicle display and listen for your stop. Once you leave the tram, use the hotel's actual entrance as your map destination. A property pin may point to a courtyard or the wrong side of the building; its arrival instructions are often more useful than the map alone.
For a tight onward rail connection, search the trip all the way from the airport to your train's departure station. Leave room for baggage collection and the walk to the platform. A public-transport fare of zero does not remove those parts of the transfer or guarantee a connection after a delayed flight.
Choose a bus when the journey planner shows a better stop for your destination. The airport currently lists bus 6 serving Hamilius, bus 16 serving Stäreplaz/Étoile, and bus 29 serving Gare Centrale. Those route details come from the airport's current transport listing, not an older travel blog.
Do not treat these numbers as interchangeable city-centre shuttles. Check the direction, departure platform and final walking segment for the departure you intend to take. A bus serving the railway station may solve one traveller's problem while sending another away from the hotel.
This is especially useful if you have a street address outside the tram corridor. Compare a direct bus with a tram-plus-bus journey, including any wait between vehicles. With public transport free, fewer changes can matter more than a small difference in the time aboard.
Keep the route open until you reach the correct airport platform, then save a screenshot showing the destination and stop names. Screenshots help if a phone connection drops; live information remains better for a cancellation or a changed departure. Use the official planner again if the airport display differs from your saved itinerary.
Choose a taxi if the hotel entrance matters more than the fare saving: heavy luggage, a difficult final walk or an arrival after the useful public services have finished. The airport's taxi guidance places the taxi queue in front of the terminal and currently directs pre-booked pickups to Kiss & Fly Parking C.
A reserved car and the ordinary taxi queue can therefore involve different meeting points. Read the driver's instructions before walking outside. If the message says Parking C, do not wait at the taxi queue and assume the driver will find you there.
Ask the operator for a quote or fare explanation before committing, with your full hotel address and any special requirements. This guide does not give a fixed city fare because a single amount would hide differences in destination and booking terms. For a group, compare the total quoted car cost with the convenience of travelling together.
If you need an accessible vehicle or a child seat, request it expressly. A generic “taxi booked” confirmation does not establish either. Agree what happens if the flight is delayed, and keep the pickup instructions available offline as well as in your messages.
Free public transport in Luxembourg applies to domestic buses, trams and ordinary second-class trains. The government guide excludes first-class rail travel and says passengers must be able to show personal identification when requested. Free travel does not mean that you should leave your documents behind.
The transport administration's national tickets page separately points travellers to cross-border fares. If your hotel or next stop is in France, Belgium or Germany, check the full international journey. Do not board an international service believing the entire trip is free because it starts in Luxembourg.
A regional co:sim Europe data plan is another separate decision: check its current destination list against every country you will visit. Neither a transport pass nor a plan's regional name proves that all parts of your itinerary are included. Data coverage and ticket validity answer different questions.
Search with the date and time you expect to leave arrivals, rather than the plane's scheduled landing time. Recheck after a delay and compare the last useful public journey with your hotel's reception or self-check-in arrangements. Avoid assuming that an airport tram runs all night; consult the live planner and departure displays.
For connectivity, choose the option your phone and trip actually need:
| Connection | Practical use |

On the co:sim Luxembourg plan page, check the displayed network information and data allowance before purchase. The current listing names Orange and POST for several plans, but your selected plan's details are the relevant ones. Use the emailed installation instructions on a reliable connection, then select the travel line for mobile data according to those instructions. Keep your home line's roaming choices separate.

The tram from Luxembourg Airport to Luxembourg City is free for tourists as part of the country's domestic public-transport system. The government's official explanation includes residents and visitors, so you do not need a local subscription for this ordinary trip. Choose Hamilius or Gare Centrale according to your actual destination, then check the service for your arrival date. Free transport does not include a taxi, and first-class trains and international journeys have separate fare rules. Keep personal identification available if requested. A co:sim data-only eSIM is optional for checking the route and messaging your hotel; it is not a tram ticket or a requirement for boarding. You can instead save directions before leaving a Wi-Fi connection. The practical choice is how you will handle a changed departure or the final walk, rather than whether you need to pay for the tram.
A data-only eSIM can give you mobile internet for a hotel's booking messages, email or a messaging app, but it does not supply an ordinary telephone number. co:sim's Luxembourg data plans are data-only, so a hotel asking you to make a conventional phone call still requires another calling method. Keep the hotel's written check-in instructions and the driver's meeting-point message on your phone before arrival. For a taxi, confirm that the agreed contact channel works for both parties; do not assume an internet messaging service is the driver's preferred option. Check that your handset supports eSIM and is unlocked before buying a plan. Existing carrier roaming is a reasonable alternative if your allowance suits the trip. Whichever connection you use, save the street address, booking reference and pickup instructions offline, because mobile coverage or a depleted battery can still interrupt communication at an inconvenient moment.
Hamilius and Gare Centrale serve different arrival needs in Luxembourg City. Hamilius is the more relevant starting search for the central shopping and old-town area, while Gare Centrale is the main railway station stop and a useful choice for onward trains or nearby accommodation. The official tram station list includes both on the airport-connected line. Enter your hotel's full street address in the journey planner to identify the best stop and remaining walk. Do not rely on a booking label such as “city centre”, which is too broad to settle the route. If you have luggage or an access requirement, ask the hotel which entrance and stop it recommends. For an onward train, allow time after leaving the tram to find the railway platform. A convenient stop is useful only if it matches the next stage of your own journey.
Plan the airport transfer around your address, check the actual departure and keep a taxi fallback for a difficult arrival. Before flying, compare the co:sim Luxembourg options above and save the route and hotel entrance offline.
