For an eSIM purchase, PayPal and a credit card offer different dispute routes, not guaranteed refunds. For US buyers, eligibility and dispute deadlines matter before payment. co:sim currently offers card checkout, not PayPal; the PayPal comparison applies to sellers that actually accept it.
An eSIM is an embedded SIM. A data-only travel plan provides mobile internet, not a new regular calling or SMS number. Buying the wrong kind of plan is a different problem from a seller failing to deliver the plan it described.

Start with the package and seller, then choose the payment route. A payment logo does not establish that your phone is compatible, your destination is covered or a change of travel plans qualifies for money back. On co:sim, inspect the allowance, validity, billing-start rule and coverage before checkout. Those facts describe what you are buying and give you a record if the delivered service differs.
| Route | What to check before paying | What it does not promise |
|---|---|---|
| Seller refund policy | Eligibility, deadline and refund destination | Every disappointed buyer qualifies |
| PayPal at a seller accepting it | US Purchase Protection eligibility and claim type | Every eSIM purchase is covered |
| Credit card issuer | Billing-error instructions and other dispute rules | Every chargeback succeeds |
| co:sim card checkout | Current payment options and exact package details | PayPal protection on a non-PayPal payment |
For an ordinary trip cancellation, begin with the merchant's published terms. For non-delivery or a material mismatch, describe the facts and ask the seller to resolve them. The CFPB's product-and-service guidance also starts with contacting the seller. A policy refusal alone does not prove a valid payment dispute.
PayPal's US Purchase Protection terms distinguish Item Not Received from Significantly Not as Described. Eligibility, exclusions, documentation and the resolution process matter. Do not assume a digital purchase is covered merely because a PayPal button appears.
The policy requires an account in good standing, payment from that account, an attempt to resolve the issue with the seller and timely responses to information requests. Friends-and-family payments are excluded. Buying through an account and buying an eligible item are separate conditions.
PayPal also distinguishes a material mismatch from a correctly described purchase that simply did not meet expectations. If a listing clearly sold data-only access, discovering that it does not supply ordinary SMS is not the same as an undisclosed missing feature. Save the actual listing rather than reconstructing it from memory.
These are different clocks, checked against the official sources on 17 October 2026:
The card clock is statement-based, not simply 60 days from purchase. A call or app message should not replace the required written billing-error notice. Ask the issuer where and how to send it; keep a copy. Other dispute categories can follow different procedures.
Opening a PayPal dispute is not the end of its process: its terms require escalation to a claim within 20 days after opening if no agreement is reached. Read the instructions in your own case. Do not wait for your flight or a lengthy support conversation before checking deadlines.
Keep the listing, seller identity, checkout total, payment receipt and terms shown when you buy. Record the promised delivery method, coverage, compatibility requirements and when validity starts. For example, the US data-plan page is a package-selection example, not evidence that US payment rules apply to every buyer worldwide.
For co:sim, retain the delivery email and the order information in My Plans. If something goes wrong, record what happened and when, including the seller's replies. Keep QR codes and payment credentials private; share necessary order evidence only through official channels.
Write a factual request: “I bought this package on this date; the description promised this; this is what happened; please provide the purchased service or explain the available remedy.” Separate a missing delivery email from a delivered profile that cannot connect. An accurate timeline helps the seller and any later reviewer assess the same purchase.
Neither route guarantees recovery for an eSIM purchase. PayPal's US Purchase Protection program has eligibility conditions and separate deadlines for non-delivery and a significant mismatch. A credit card can provide billing-error and other dispute routes, but the applicable process depends on the facts and your issuer. PayPal itself says card chargeback rights may be broader than its program. Compare the actual seller, package description and available payment methods before choosing. co:sim currently supports card checkout rather than PayPal, so there is no PayPal purchase-protection choice within that checkout. If another seller accepts PayPal funded by a card, read both sets of deadlines before paying. Keep the receipt and listing, and choose a dispute route deliberately if a real problem arises; a familiar payment brand is not a substitute for checking the product.
Ask your issuer about the specific issue rather than assuming a small purchase has no options. The CFPB describes card disputes and billing errors separately from a conditional right to withhold an unpaid balance. That latter remedy generally includes a price over $50, a home-state or 100-mile location condition, good-faith contact with the seller and a purchase not yet fully paid. It does not automatically apply to a cheap travel eSIM. Nor should its price threshold be treated as a universal minimum for every card dispute. For a co:sim order, start by identifying the package, payment and delivery facts, then ask the seller and issuer which process fits. Preserve the statement date and written-notice deadline where billing-error rules apply. Do not stop paying your entire card bill based on a general blog explanation of a limited remedy.
PayPal's US terms say you cannot pursue its Purchase Protection dispute and your card issuer's dispute for the same transaction at the same time or seek double recovery. If you pursue both, PayPal says it closes its case. The terms also distinguish switching routes: after starting with the issuer you cannot later pursue the PayPal claim; after an unsuccessful PayPal decision you may seek the issuer route, subject to its requirements. Do not assume the issuer's deadline pauses while PayPal reviews a claim. Ask about timing before choosing, keep records of any refund already received and disclose that recovery. These rules concern a card-funded PayPal purchase at a seller accepting PayPal. A direct card payment has no PayPal case simply because you also have a PayPal account.
Choose the package on its merits, then confirm the payment route available at co:sim before paying.
