Best eSIM for Kosovo (2026): Plans, Networks and Balkan Trips
Kosovo is increasingly part of Western Balkans road trips, often combined with Albania, North Macedonia and Montenegro. It is also one of the places where travellers most often get caught out on data. Kosovo is not in the EU, so EU roaming does not apply, and many regional "Balkans" eSIMs do not include it. co:sim's Kosovo eSIM connects to Vala (4G), one of the country's two main operators. This guide covers why Kosovo needs its own plan, what the options cost, when a global plan works out cheaper, and where coverage changes.
#Why Kosovo needs its own eSIM
- EU or EEA phone plan: EU roaming rules do not apply in Kosovo, and roaming charges can be high.
- Balkans regional plans: check the country list carefully. co:sim's Europe (7) plan, for example, covers Serbia, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Croatia, Albania, Greece and North Macedonia, but not Kosovo.
- Other international plans: expect standard roaming rates.
Kosovo has used its own +383 country code since 2017, and its two main operators are Vala and IPKO. The north of the country is also served by a Serbian operator, which matters for coverage if you travel there.
#co:sim Kosovo eSIM plans
The Kosovo eSIM runs on Vala (4G). At the time of writing (October 2026):
| Plan type | Options | From |
|---|---|---|
| Daily plans | 1GB, 2GB, 3GB, 5GB or 10GB of high-speed data per day | $12.99 per day |
| Fixed data | 1GB / 7 days | $10.99 |
| Fixed data | 3GB / 15 or 30 days | $28.99 |
| Fixed data | 5GB, 10GB or 20GB / 30 days | from $44.99 |
Validity starts at first connection, you have 90 days to install, and some plans can be topped up. Check the plan page for current prices.
#When a global plan is the better value
Kosovo is included in co:sim's Global (120 areas) and Global (139 areas) plans. If your trip also takes in Albania, North Macedonia or other countries, compare the global plan's price with a Kosovo plan plus a Balkans plan. For many multi-country routes, one global eSIM costs less than two separate plans and avoids switching lines at borders.

#Coverage in Kosovo
- Pristina, Prizren, Peja and Gjakova have good 4G coverage in town and along the main highways.
- Mountain areas such as the Rugova Canyon and the Sharr Mountains have patchier coverage, so download hiking routes and offline maps.
- North Kosovo (around Mitrovica North and the areas bordering Serbia) is partly served by a Serbian operator, and coverage on the Kosovo networks can be weaker there.
#How to set it up
- Check your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
- Buy and install on Wi-Fi before you travel. Validity starts at first connection.
- Set the eSIM as your mobile data line with data roaming on.
- Turn data roaming off on your home line, especially near borders.
- After crossing into Kosovo, confirm the eSIM has connected to Vala and load a web page.
#FAQ
#Does EU roaming work in Kosovo?
No. Kosovo is outside the EU, so EU roaming rules do not apply.
#Is Kosovo included in co:sim Balkans or Europe plans?
It is not in the Europe (7) Balkans plan. It is included in the Global (120 areas) and Global (139 areas) plans.
#Which network does co:sim use in Kosovo?
The Kosovo plans list Vala with 4G.
#How much data do I need for a few days?
For maps, messaging and photos, 1GB to 3GB is usually enough for a short visit.
Kosovo is easy to add to a Balkan trip once you know it needs to be covered on its own. Check your plan's country list, compare the global option, and install before you cross the border.
