Choose Phuket in December if beach days are the purpose of your holiday; choose Bali if temples, food, rice-field scenery and a good hotel matter as much as swimming. Bali's December sits in the wet season, while Phuket features in Thailand's December beach season. A data-only eSIM (embedded SIM) from co:sim can support either trip, but it should follow your destination choice, rather than decide it.
Phuket is the clearer match for a beach-first break with a single resort base. Bali suits a holiday that still feels worthwhile when an outdoor afternoon becomes lunch, a spa visit or time under a covered terrace. Neither choice promises clear skies, safe swimming or an uncrowded Christmas holiday.
| Your priority | Bali | Phuket |
|---|---|---|
| A holiday built around the beach | Make a flexible plan for rain | The stronger seasonal starting point |
| Culture away from the coast | Ubud, temples and inland scenery | Old Town, food and local heritage |
| Minimal hotel changes | Choose one coastal base | Choose one beach district |
| A mixed inland-and-coast trip | A natural fit, with transfers to budget | Possible, but check how much driving you want |
| Independent mobile data | co:sim's Indonesia country page | Thailand country page; check the chosen plan |
The table is a decision guide, not a ranking of every hotel or beach. Lonely Planet's island comparison makes the useful distinction between Phuket's beach-and-food appeal and Bali's wider cultural landscape. Start with the activities you would regret missing, then choose a neighbourhood that makes those activities easy.
If your ideal holiday means leaving your room and walking to the same beach every morning, location can matter more than the island label. Inspect the accommodation map, beach access and nearby dining before comparing photographs of infinity pools.

Bali's seasonal guide identifies November to March as the wet season. That is a planning pattern, not a forecast for your booking. Rain can change the order of a day, and a sunny morning does not guarantee the same conditions later. Keep your most weather-sensitive excursion movable rather than attaching it to a non-refundable sequence of activities.
Thailand's seasonal guide identifies December to February as a beach-focused period and specifically names Phuket. This is an Andaman-coast comparison. Do not substitute information about a different Thai island and assume it describes Phuket's sea conditions. A favourable season still leaves room for showers, wind and cancelled boat trips.
For Bali, build a day with a morning outing, a nearby meal and an indoor alternative in the same district. A distant inland attraction and a late dinner on the opposite coast leave little room to adapt. For Phuket, reserve a beach day you can swap with Old Town instead of booking every boat departure before arrival.
At either destination, follow beach flags and operator instructions. A photograph of calm water is not evidence of conditions during your visit. Families should decide whether a pool, shaded areas and easy access to food would keep a hotel enjoyable when the sea is unsuitable.
The useful weather question is therefore not “Will it rain?” It is “Would I still enjoy this hotel and this neighbourhood if my outdoor plan changed?” Answer that before paying for the room.
There is no defensible universal winner without quotes for your actual dates. Compare the same room standard, cancellation terms, luggage allowance and airport transfer. A cheaper nightly room rate can lose its advantage if you keep paying to reach the beach or change hotels across the island.
Create a quote basket containing flights, accommodation, transfers, meals you realistically want, activities and mobile data. Record the currency beside each quote. Compare the final checkout amounts, including compulsory charges, rather than the headline rate in a search result. Keep optional tours separate so they do not disguise the cost of the basic holiday.
For Bali, check whether the foreign-tourist levy applies to you. The official Love Bali portal lists IDR 150,000 as of 5 October 2026, with an exemption application and official payment process. That levy is not your visa or a complete entry-cost estimate. Check the official information for your own situation instead of buying an unofficial bundle because it appears in search advertising.
December should not automatically be treated as a bargain month in Bali: the seasonal guide discusses December celebrations and holiday crowds. Likewise, a “Thailand is cheap” claim does not price a particular Phuket resort. If the totals are close, choose the better trip fit and reduce transfers or optional excursions to control spending.
Choose your base around your daily routine. In Bali, an inland stay around Ubud makes sense for a culture-focused trip; a coastal base makes sense when beach access is central. Treat a split stay as a deliberate change of scenery, with packing and check-in time, rather than a free extra destination.
In Phuket, compare the beach district with Old Town before booking. A beach hotel and an Old Town hotel solve different problems. The island comparison describes Phuket's beaches and cultural food scene; it does not make every address equally convenient for both.
Save the accommodation's exact map pin and entrance instructions. Ask how the transfer works for your landing time and who will contact you if the flight changes. Do not use a fixed airport-to-hotel estimate from a different district as your own journey time.
Build the arrival evening around the hotel neighbourhood. A shower, a nearby meal and checking the next day's conditions are usually more useful than committing to a distant dinner reservation before you know how the journey feels.

If you choose Bali, compare the Indonesia data plans; if you choose Phuket, use the Thailand data-plan page. co:sim lists plan-specific details so you can check the allowance, billing-start rule and supported destinations before buying. A country plan should not be assumed to cover both countries.
Use hotel Wi-Fi for large uploads and downloads, and reserve mobile data for maps, messages, transport arrangements and changed reservations away from the hotel. A local SIM or an existing roaming package may be suitable if you need a local phone number or already have acceptable terms. Data-only plans do not include ordinary voice calls or SMS; internet messaging and calling apps still depend on a data connection.
Check that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Read the selected plan's installation and activation instructions, and do not assume that installation alone starts, or postpones, every plan's validity. Keep the booking address available offline so the first transfer does not depend entirely on a working connection.
The current new-customer offer has its own eligibility checks. It requires sign-in and a valid payment card for verification; the card is not charged. Check the live page rather than treating an offer as an automatic entitlement or a complete holiday data allowance.
FREECheck the Indonesia new-customer offerBali can still be a good December choice when the holiday includes food, culture and a hotel you enjoy spending time in. December falls within the island's wet-season pattern, so a trip built entirely around uninterrupted beach weather is a less comfortable bet. Keep outdoor activities flexible, choose indoor alternatives near your base and leave room to move a day trip. Rain does not prove that every day will be lost, and a dry spell does not establish safe swimming conditions. For maps and booking changes away from hotel Wi-Fi, co:sim's Indonesia page lets you compare data-only plans without pretending connectivity changes the weather. Choose the island because its non-beach activities suit you, then prepare a practical rain plan rather than hoping the forecast removes the trade-off.
Phuket is usually the more straightforward seasonal choice for a December holiday whose main purpose is beach time. The Thailand seasonal guide names Phuket in its December-to-February beach advice, but this is not a promise about your travel week. Check conditions before swimming or joining an excursion, and keep an alternative such as Old Town or a relaxed hotel day. Pick a beach district that matches your routine, instead of assuming a bargain room anywhere on the island gives easy beach access. A co:sim Thailand data-only plan can help you check changed arrangements outside the hotel, subject to the selected plan and local conditions. It does not replace a local phone number or remove the need to keep your accommodation details offline. Compare the whole holiday, including where you will actually stay.
Combining Bali and Phuket is possible, but it changes a beach break into a trip with another international travel day. Price the flight, baggage, airport transfers and lost hotel time before deciding that a second island adds value. Check entry requirements for both countries separately and verify that any mobile plan you buy covers the entire route. For a short holiday, choosing one base normally leaves more room for rest and weather changes. A split makes more sense when you actively want two different travel experiences and accept the logistics involved. Do not count a flight day as a full sightseeing day, even if the airborne journey looks manageable. If you are still undecided, compare the activities you would miss on each island rather than trying to solve the choice by putting both into an already crowded schedule.
Once the island and neighbourhood are chosen, compare the live co:sim plan details against your dates and device, then finish the transfer and hotel arrangements.
